I first came face-to-face with the differences between British and American English when I taught English as a Second Language ( ESL) in 2008. When I began to teach students who had taken their first English classes in other countries, l
began to realize that I needed to be very flexible in how I taught English.
While I searched the web for differences between the words that were different between the two variations of English, I was very surprised to find that the word "smart" means intelligent in the US, but refers to the way someone is dressed in
Here are some differences which I thought could cause misunderstandings, especially for students who are studying English in the US:
Cart: This is the thing you wheel around the store to place the articles you are about to buy in. ( Although in North Carolina, they use the word " buggy".) The British use the word" trolley" instead of cart. In the US, trolley is used for trolley cars, which used to be powered by electricity and run on rails just like trains. Most of the trolleys now, however, are just buses that have been built to look like the old-fashioned trolleys.
Rental car: Britons use the term "hire car" for a car that has been rented.
For those of you who speak British English, you may know that rental cars are usually cars that are rented for a short period of time; even though leased cars are actually
rented, they are used for a long period of time, usually at least three years.
These are only a very few examples of the differences between. British English and American English. If you are going to be an English teacher, you will need to know a lot about the differences between the two languages.
25. The differences between British English and American English may probably lead to _____.
A. convenience B. balance C. civilization D. misunderstandings
26. How did the author find the word "smart" is different between British English and American English? _____.
A. By searching the web. B. By teaching students.
C. By talking to people. D. By making a survey.
27. Which of the following is frequently used in the UK? _____.
A. Cart. B. Buggy. C. Trolley. D. Rental car.
28. What can we know from the text? _____.
A. British and American English have nothing in common.
B. It' s no use telling the differences between British and American English.
C. It is difficult for Britons and Americans to understand each other English.
D. There are many differences between British and American English.
I was excited because I had been invited to go to Tory' s birthday party. Tory was not my best friend but my classmate. However, my best friend, Jane, and her family were going to Disneyland for the whole day. She invited me to go with them. I loved Disneyland so much. I wanted to go there more than any other place. I ran to ask my mom if it was okay. She reminded me that Tory's party was on the same day.
Disneyland was my most favorite place in the whole world and I especially liked going there with my best friend. I begged my mom to allow me to go to Disneyland. She told me,“Once you accept an invitation, you can’t change your mind or do something else just because you want to do it more. If someone had said they’d come to our party and then, because something better came along, they changed their mind and didn’t come, how would you feel?” Although I didn’t want to admit it, my mom was right. It would hurt my feelings if someone did that to me. Although I didn’t want to, I told my best friend that I wouldn’t be able to go to Disneyland with her.
So my best friend and her family went to Disneyland and my mom dropped me off at Tory' s party. I did not want to be there. However, something interesting happened after I got there. There was a make-your-own pizza contest, which we all enjoyed very much. We all took a present to the birthday party, and Tory's mom and dad had a special present to give to each of us too!
Not only did I love the party and have a great time, but I learned an important lesson. My mom was right as usual.
29. What' s the author' s attitude to Jane' s invitation?
A. Doubtful. B. Defensive. C. Positive. D. Negative.
30. What can we learn from the author's mother's words?
A. Where there is a will, there is a way.
B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. A good beginning makes a good ending.
D. Once you've made the promise, you have to keep it.
31. What' s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. The author went to Disneyland finally.
B. The author enjoyed Tory's party.
C. The author received a special present.
D. The author made a pizza at Tory's party.
Encourage young boys and girls to run, jump and chase after each other and you can improve their ability to think, according to a new study. The results stress the importance of physical activity for children’s brain health and development,
Especially in terms of the particular thinking skills that most affect academic performance.
The researchers in the new study wondered whether regular exercise would improve children’s thinking skills, providing a boost to their normal mental development.
They received contributions from 220 local youngsters and brought all of them to the university for a series of tests to measure their fitness and current thinking skills. The researchers then divided the group in half, with 110 0f the children
joining a wait list for the after-school program, meaning that they would continue with their normal lives and serve as a control group. The other 110 boys and girls began taking a bus every afternoon to the university campus, where they participated in organized activities in the wild or childish fun.
The program lasted for a full school year. At the end of the program, both groups returned to the university to repeat the physical and thinking tests.
As would have been expected, the children in the exercise group were now more physically fit than they had been before, while children in the control group were not. The active children also had lost body fat, although changes in weight and body composition were not the focus of this study.
More importantly, the children in the exercise group also displayed substantial improvements in their scores. Meanwhile, the children in the control group also raised their test scores, but to a much smaller extent. In effect, both groups'
brains were developing, but the process was more rapid in the children who ran and played.
If you want young students to do well in reading and math, make sure that they always move.
32. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

C. How to get a greater improvement in scores.
D. Exercise can improve children's brains.

A. controlled their daily diet
B. walked to the university campus
C. continued to lead a normal life
D. joined in organized activities in the wild
34. At the end of the program, both groups of youngsters
A. were more physically fit than before
B. improved their test scores and brains
C. were much weaker than before
D. developed their brains to the same extent
35. The underlined word "substantial" in the sixth paragraph probably means _____ .
A. great B. small C. slow D. appropriate,
Do you ever stop to observe your own thoughts, behaviors, yourself and your life? Do you ever wonder why you are doing whatever it is that you are doing? 36 Most of us rarely or never stop and question the way we live our lives and why we live the way we do. Here are some things you should always remember as you go through this journey of life.
1. Change is the only constant thing in life.
No matter how much we try to avoid change, it will be impossible to do so, since change is the only constant in life. The only way that we can live is if we grow. 37 The only way that we can change is if we learn.
2. You cannot force love.
All the family, friends, co-workers, lovers love us because they choose to, not because we want them to. You can't force love. It's there or it isn't. If it's not there ,you've got to be able to admit it. 38
3. Nothing lasts forever.
39 When the time comes to say goodbye, let them all go. Nothing lasts forever, so live it up, drink it down, take chances and never regret because at one point it was what you wanted.
As you walk through life, you will fall down many times. You will fail and make mistakes, but that' s okay. Through everything that happens to you, either good or bad, you gain all the wisdom, strength, knowledge and confidence. That's what life is all about.
A. Mistakes are part of your life
B. Do you ever stop and observe the world?
C. You'll only regret the things you don't do
D. The only way that we can grow is if we change
E. Love is meant to be felt, enjoyed and lived, not to be forced on anyone.
F. We need to learn to stay away from things, places and people in our lives
G. If it's there, you've got to do whatever it takes to protect the ones you love.

One possible version:
Recently, our school made a survey about what difficulties students have in learning and living in school. Some students are worried about exams and some have trouble getting along well with people 8uch as their parents and classmates. Others are very unhappy. Besides, most students have difficulty in learning.
Here are some suggestions which may be helpful to these students. First of all, they can talk to their parents and teachers frequently about their secrets. In addition, they should take an active pan in activities and do more exercise. What' s more, students ought to go to see a doctor if they feel unhappy or unwell.
In a word, when facing difficulties, students should take a positive way to
deal with them. Only in this way can they study and live happily.
